The adventure trade-off

There is something inherently selfish about remote adventures. They don't happen without a determination and doggedness - a deep commitment - to get to the starting line and go through the entire cycle from planning to departure to return. How do you find the "right" balance of personal motivation and fulfillment while accounting for other’s needs and ambitions? There are ambitions of the group and needs at home; some of which you knowingly overlook to achieve what might be possible. What is the right balance of personal need for exploration and responsibility? I consistently see this as a spectrum across teams, people, and ventures. The commitment to literally weathering any storm has to be deeply engrained to see any great adventure come to fruition. Personally, I'm constantly reminded of a quote from a close mentor of mine, Hilaree Nelson, "Being a dreamer, I hope there never comes a day when I wake up and I don't have any crazy ideas or things I want to achieve". But, adventure is a knife-edge of feasible, survivable, and community.
